Rosatom Successfully Commences Uranium Production at a new Deposit Using Eco-Friendly ISR Method

Rosatom’s mining division, Dalur JSC, has achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of uranium production at the Dobrovolnoye deposit in Russia’s Kurgan Region. Utilizing the environmentally responsible In-Situ Recovery (ISR) method, the company has delivered its first batch of uranium product to support Russia’s nuclear energy sector. This achievement underscores Dalur’s leadership in sustainable mining and aligns with global trends toward cleaner energy solutions.

The Dobrovolnoye deposit, part of the Trans-Urals Uranium Ore Region, is now operational following the completion of infrastructure construction and rigorous commissioning of process equipment. The ISR method, known for its minimal environmental footprint, involves injecting leaching solutions into underground uranium-bearing formations, dissolving the mineral, and pumping it to the surface. This closed-loop process eliminates waste generation, preserves surface integrity, and ensures natural radioactivity remains safely underground.

The first uranium concentrate from Dobrovolnoye meets stringent quality standards, marking a critical step toward full-scale industrial production,” said Dinis Ezhurov, Director General of Dalur JSC. “This deposit will secure a stable supply of natural uranium until 2045 while creating approximately 300 jobs in the Zverinogolovskoye district, boosting local economic growth.”

For Namibia, a nation deeply invested in uranium mining, Dalur’s ISR method offers valuable insights into balancing resource extraction with environmental stewardship. By employing the ISR method—which eliminates surface disruption and safeguards soil and groundwater—the company ensures that neighboring farms continue to cultivate fertile lands without compromise. Rigorous environmental monitoring and partnerships with local farmers, including sourcing fresh produce for employee canteens, reinforce a shared commitment to sustainability and rural prosperity. This synergy between industry and agriculture offers a replicable model for nations like Namibia, where uranium mining and farming are both pillars of economic growth.

As global demand for uranium surges amid the clean energy transition, Dalur’s success at Dobrovolnoye underscores the viability of ISR as the future of responsible mining. Projections indicate that ISR will account for 60% of global uranium production by 2030, driven by its efficiency and eco-friendly advantages. With its proven track record in Russia, Dalur JSC is poised to support international partners in adopting this method, ensuring a stable uranium supply while prioritizing environmental and community well-being.
