Headspring Investments’ Community Engagement in Aminus, Namibia
On June 13, 2024, Headspring Investments, along with the Honourable Deputy Minister of Fisheries & Marine Resources, Hon. Sylvia Makgone, visited the community of Aminus. This visit was part of Headspring Investments’ ongoing efforts to engage with local communities, address their concerns, and discuss the potential benefits of the company’s operations. The meeting was marked by open dialogue, traditional community values, and a spirit of Ubuntu.
The visit started with an emphasis on community support and the spirit of Ubuntu. The Honourable Deputy Minister invited a technical team from her Ministry to explore programs that would help communities achieve self-sufficiency. One of the key initiatives discussed was converting a natural spring in the area into fish breeding ponds, marking the first aquaponics project of its kind in Aminus. The community also requested that Headspring Investments participate by establishing a garden that would be irrigated with water from the ponds.
Headspring Investments demonstrated solidarity with the community by providing food, cooking, and sharing a meal with residents, reflecting a deep respect for traditional values. During these interactions, the Headspring Investments team provided insights into their operations, including updates on Project Wings, and discussed potential community benefits when the mine becomes operational.
A significant concern raised by the community was the need for more education about mining processes, safety measures, and the broader impacts of mining on their area. The community expressed a strong desire for the mine to commence operations but stressed the importance of being well-informed about the methods and safety guarantees associated with mining.
The community highlighted pressing agricultural challenges, particularly the need for new boreholes to ensure a reliable supply of clean water for their gardens and households. They expressed interest in collaborating with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources on implementing solar-powered borehole systems. Additionally, they requested assistance with water tanks for communities in severe poverty, who currently lack access to both water and food.
Headspring Investments acknowledged the community’s concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to positively impacting the communities within which it operates. The organization emphasized that mining, when conducted responsibly, can significantly contribute to national development.
Headspring Investments is willing to conduct a comprehensive educational session focusing on Project Wings, covering topics such as operational safety, transparency, and the benefits to the community. In response to the agricultural needs highlighted, Headspring Investments agreed to explore solutions for drilling new boreholes and implementing solar-powered water systems to provide a sustainable supply.
The meeting in Aminus was both productive and enriching, underscoring the importance of community engagement, respect for traditional values, and collaborative problem-solving. Headspring Investments remains dedicated to supporting and uplifting the Aminus community through targeted initiatives and ongoing dialogue, demonstrating a commitment to leaving a positive legacy in the regions it serves.
